The Groove Warehouse is proud to present John Morrison in a drum workshop for drummers of all ages. This super session will introduce drummers to the Jazz style of drumming in a fun relaxed afternoon session.

John Morrison has delighted audiences for more than 25 years with his humour and dedication to sounds that swing. Equally at home in a small group or big band setting, his musical facility runs the entire spectrum from traditional jazz, swing, Bebop, and contemporary jazz.

The eldest of the Morrison family, John has spent much of his musical life playing and recording with his younger brother, internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, James Morrison.John studied Big Band Jazz with the late Richard 's premier jazz big band "The Morrison Bros Big Bad Band". Over the next decade, John toured with James all over the world at jazz festivals (Montreaux Jazz Festival, Bern Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, The Vienne Jazz Festival, Pori Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz Festival, Monte Carlo Jazz Festival, Paris Jazz Festival, Berlin Jazz Festival) and clubs in Europe and Asia. John widened his exposure and experience also playing with a variety of other well-known artists including James Moody, Gordon Goodwin, Scott Hamilton, Richie Cole, John and Jeff Clayton, Garry Dial, Jimmy Witherspoon, Eartha Kitt, as well as Australian luminaries, Don Burrows, George Golla, and Bob Barnard.

Further to his playing schedule, John is committed to music education and to supporting and mentoring young players in their endeavours. He is currently musical director for the Jazz Workshop Australia Jazz Camp, and patron of Zooo Superbande, MoJo Jazz Orchestra, The Australian Southern Stars, Brisbane Jazz Club Big Band Festival, and Smithfield State High School's Jazz Academy. He developed the role of Artistic Director for Generations in Jazz for over 25 years, until handing over the reins in 2013 to launch his own festival, Big Band Blast, in Port Macquarie, NSW. John was on the grants board for the Contemporary Music Touring Program for 11 years, including 1 year as acting chair, advising the Federal Arts Minister on the eligibility and suitability of bands that were seeking support for developing their music.

John is a passionate jazz educator and sees enormous benefit in community support for youth music programs all over the world. Since 2012, John has been developing band programs in the Cape York Aboriginal Academy primary schools as an initiative of the Queensland Music Festival. This program endeavours to raise literacy and numeracy, as well as attendance, through music education. It also aims to give the children a better opportunity to settle into high school life when they transition to boarding school. John is in demand all over Australia as a clinician, not only in high schools and primary schools, but working with community groups and university bands. He also works directly with teachers through pedagogy-based Professional Development programs, helping them develop sustainable music programs.
